I published my first essay in September 1965. It considered a question that has remained with me ever since: the tension between the policy perspective of institutions and the requirements of particular communities. The immediate subject was secondary education, but the underlying concern has stayed remarkably constant throughout my writing life. I made my first documented submissions in 1967/68, and have written continuously throughout my life. I have also written several books and remain actively engaged in that work.

I live mostly in Skerries, Ireland, and write mainly in south-west France (Montory), the United Kingdom (Nottingham), and Mauritius (Flic en Flac). For that reason I hold marshall.ie, dmarshall.fr, dmarshall.uk and marshall.mu as domain names for my work, although marshall.ie is the shingle under which I principally write.
